Resources to Support Remote Advising

Equity and Access

When advising virtually, it is important to remember that access to off-campus technology varies widely among our students. As you develop your strategy for reaching your students virtually, be sure to communicate alternative options for students to connect with you in the event that they do not have access to reliable technology.

Zoom Web Conferencing

The Zoom video conferencing platform enables synchronous (real-time) online meetings and is well-suited for both individual and group advising, as well as drop-in office hours and on-the-fly appointments. DELTA has a suite of training materials to help advisors and faculty conduct remote meetings and instruction. Here are some additional resources you may find helpful:

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts is a video conferencing application housed within the Google Suite of tools. It allows for both individual and group advising sessions.

Phone Advising

Many advisors may choose to conduct their advising appointments via phone. A few things to consider with conducting advising through phone appointments.

  • If you are at home, you might not want use their personal phone line to call your students. You can make phone calls through Google Hangout or Zoom, and therefore your personal phone number will not display to your students.
  • Be sure to determine in advance who will be responsible for initiating the phone call.
  • Just as with any other appointment, be sure to record advising notes from the session.

Navigate NC State

Many advisors already use the Navigate NC State advising platform for appointment scheduling and campaigns, in addition to note-taking. If you do not already use the Navigate system for appointments, you may wish to consider leveraging this technology as it offers flexibility in scheduling multiple appointment types (in person, virtual).
